How to Manage Chronic Constipation | Long Island Dietitian Support
How to Manage Chronic Constipation
Diet is critically important. It’s not just what you eat, but also when and how often you eat. If you are experiencing infrequent bowel movements (missing days), hard stools, or incomplete evacuation (feeling like you still need to go), start with the basics:
- Drink plenty of water
- Gradually increase both soluble and insoluble fiber
- Maintain regular physical activity
- Establish a consistent eating pattern, beginning with breakfast
- Try using a footstool on the toilet to help properly align your rectum
What Is Chronic Constipation?
Constipation is so common that it is easy to ignore. However, for many people, occasional irregularity can develop into a chronic condition—and it rarely happens overnight.
Constipation is not a single-symptom disorder. In addition to infrequent bowel movements, symptoms may include excessive straining, hard stools, the need to use your fingers to assist bowel movements, or the sensation of a blockage or incomplete evacuation.
Common Causes of Constipation
Constipation develops when something inside or outside the digestive tract interferes with normal bowel function. Common causes include:
- A low-fiber diet
- Limited physical activity
- Medical conditions
- Medications
- Pelvic floor dysfunction
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- IMO (intestinal methanogen overgrowth), a microbiome-related condition

- Using supplements when appropriate
- Addressing shy bowel syndrome
- Using a squatting position during bowel movements
