Leaky Gut Nutrition Therapy with a Long Island Dietitian

Leaky GutNutrition Therapy for Leaky Gut with a Long Island Dietitian

Digestive Health Nutrition Expert

As a Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist specializing in gastrointestinal health, I use evidence-based Medical Nutrition Therapy and personalized dietary strategies to help patients manage and reverse leaky gut. With the right nutrition plan, leaky gut symptoms can often be reversed.

What is Leaky Gut?

Your gastrointestinal (GI) tract, also known as your gut, plays a critical role in your health. It’s designed to absorb nutrients while keeping harmful substances—like toxins and bacteria—out of your bloodstream.

Leaky gut, or increased intestinal permeability, occurs when the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged. Tiny gaps allow undigested food particles, bacteria, and toxins to pass into the bloodstream, triggering inflammation. This can disrupt immune function and contribute to a wide range of health issues, including autoimmune conditions.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Leaky Gut?

Leaky gut is associated with several inflammatory and autoimmune disorders, including celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, fibromyalgia, diabetes, arthritis, and more. While some scientists see it as a symptom rather than a cause, the resulting inflammation can further damage the intestinal barrier.

Leaky gut may cause or contribute to the following symptoms:

Gastrointestinal:
Bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, indigestion

Immune System:
Fatigue, joint pain, autoimmune disorders, frequent infections

Other Symptoms:
Brain fog, mood changes (anxiety, depression), skin problems (rashes, acne), headaches, food sensitivities and intolerances, chronic fatigue

What Causes Leaky Gut?

Leaky gut can stem from poor diet, chronic stress, infections, antibiotic use, inflammatory diseases (like Crohn’s and celiac), dysbiosis, and environmental toxins. The standard American diet—low in fiber and high in sugar, ultra processed carbohydrates, saturated fats, trans fats, and alcohol—can weaken your gut barrier and disrupt microbial balance.

Can You Reverse Leaky Gut?

Yes. Healing leaky gut starts with nutrition. By adopting a high-fiber, nutrient-dense diet and eliminating processed foods, you can strengthen your gut lining and support a healthy microbiome.

What Foods Should I Choose, and Which Should I Avoid?

The best diet for healing leaky gut is rich in nutrient-dense whole, unprocessed, plant-based foods. This is not just a gut-health diet—it is a foundation for overall wellness.

Eat real food.
If it grows in the ground, flies in the sky, or swims in the sea, it’s likely good for your gut.

Eat more fiber.
Fiber feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut, which in turn help reduce inflammation and support immune function. Every time you eat, remember you’re eating for two: you and your gut. Slowly increase your fiber intake over 3–4 weeks to allow your system to adjust and minimize gas and bloating.

Limit or avoid processed foods.
Processed foods refer to any food that has been changed from its natural state and disrupt the microbiome and inflame the gut. Cut back on refined carbs, saturated fats, and artificial additives.

Foods to Include – Mediterranean-style, Plant-based, Flexitarian Diet:

  • Vegetables
  • Legumes
  • Fruits
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Healthy fats (olive oil, avocados, fish, nuts)

Foods to Limit – Standard Western Diet:

  • Ultra-processed carbs
  • Saturated fats
  • Artificial additives

I was hesitant at first to start seeing a nutritionist. I was very comfortable with my poor eating habits despite being upset about my weight; however I knew I needed to make a change.Nancy was very understanding from the start. Before meeting with Nancy, I had been in a constant cycle of over-restricting myself to lose weight rapidly, followed by binge eating and gaining it all back plus some more.Over the past year and a half, Nancy has helped me discover normal eating. She helped me understand my hunger and my fullness in addition to helping me choose better food options.Nancy is very dedicated to working with you and helping you achieve your goals. She doesn’t just help you reach your goals — she helps you change your perspective of food and eating for the better. What you learn with Nancy is not temporary — you will carry it with you and practice it throughout your life.I have lost almost 70 pounds since first meeting with Nancy and continuing on my journey. I highly recommend working with her.Nancy, thank you for all of your help!

Although I was unlucky when I developed some health issues, I was very lucky to find Nancy Mazarin, a skilled, intelligent, caring nutritionist. I saw lots of doctors but she was the one who came up with the diagnosis that finally led to my improved health. She was always available when I had questions and was even willing to meet with me one weekend when I was struggling.
